Mistakes We Make When Taking Care Of Our Teeth

23 August 2024

In today’s blog from "Blits Dental - Kakhaber Kharebava Clinic," we share tips to help you avoid the most common dental care mistakes, enhance your smile, and maintain long-term oral health.

Mistake 1: Improper Toothbrushing

One of the simplest ways to keep your teeth healthy is by brushing them regularly with a toothbrush suitable for your mouth. However, the technique matters too. Ensure you position the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gum line while brushing, and spend at least 2 minutes covering most of the tooth surfaces (front and back) properly. Don’t forget to clean your tongue by brushing its surface and the palate to eliminate bacteria, which also helps prevent bad breath.

Mistake 2: Skipping Flossing Irrigation and Interdental brush

Flossing may seem time-consuming, especially after a long day, but it’s crucial for oral health. Even after brushing, about 40% of tooth surfaces can still harbor bacteria. Using dental floss and an irrigator effectively removes food particles trapped between your teeth.

Mistake 3: Using Tobacco and Alcohol

Quitting tobacco is one of the best steps you can take to protect your mouth from serious issues like gum disease (periodontitis), palate and tongue tumors, and more. Regular alcohol consumption can also harm your teeth by disrupting the acid-alkaline balance in your mouth and body.

Mistake 4: Consuming Coffee, Tea, and Sugary Drinks

While caffeinated drinks can boost energy, regular consumption can harm teeth. Sugary fizzy drinks weaken teeth and lead to dental problems like cavities. Tea and coffee can also stain your teeth, giving them a yellowish hue.

Mistake 5: Ignoring a Healthy Diet

Your teeth need plenty of calcium. Incorporate calcium-rich foods into your diet, such as milk, yogurt, cheese, orange juice, and other nutrient-dense foods.

Mistake 6: Neglecting Regular Dental Visits

It’s essential to visit the dentist at least once every six months for professional cleanings. Regular check-ups help prevent plaque and tartar buildup and reduce the risk of cavities.
