oral care process

17 March 2021

Periodontist Nino Evgenidze, share tips for future mothers on the oral care process ⠀

There are many reasons why gum disease may affect the health of the mother and her unborn child. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Hormonal changes during pregnancy can affect the condition of the gums of pregnant women who are prone to inflammatory processes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀

Pregnancy causes hormonal changes, not only in the blood, but also in periodontal tissue and gingival fluid, which promotes the growth of periodontal pathogenic bacteria, especially during poor oral hygiene, and increases the risk of future mother gingivitis (inflammation of the gum tissue) and periodontal disease.⠀⠀

Periodontal infections increase C-reactive protein levels, which is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes.⠀

Prostaglandins are important mediators of inflammation, the level of which increases significantly during periodontal disease, especially during pregnancy.

Elevated levels can lead to premature birth and low birth weight. ⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀
 Recommendations for expectant mothers
⠀⠀
Pregnant women should brush their teeth with fluoridated toothpaste twice a day and performe Interdental cleaning before bed. ⠀⠀
Use xylitol-containing chewing gum after meals
Pregnant women who have frequent nausea, in order to prevent non-carious lesions of the teeth, it is advisable to refrain from brushing the teeth after nausea, at this time it is better to rinse with decarbonated mineral water or prepare oral rinse.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
It is advisable to visit a periodontist and, if necessary, undergo treatment in the 2nd trimester and the first half of the 3rd trimester. ⠀⠀⠀⠀
